Mullett Lake (Cheboygan County)
Mullett lake is part of a chain of lakes that forms a very nice inland waterway. This water runs from Crooked Lake through the Crooked River into Burt Lake that then connects to Mullett Lake through the Indian River. Mullet Lake is connected to lake Huron through the Cheboygan river.
Mullett lake is a large inland lake that covers about 17,360 acres. It is a wonderful destination that offers something for everyone. Essentially the entire lake is of sufficient depth to participate in just about any watersports activity and fishing is always popular on the lake.
There are a few public launch ramps that allow visitors good access to the lake. There are also several marinas and gas docks on the connecting rivers.
We visited the lake in June of 2008. We camped at and launched out of Aloha State Park on the eastern shore of the lake. This is a very nice facility with many campsites to choose from. The boat ramp is 2 lane concrete ramp with a single center dock. It is on the steeper side and getting into position to back in isn't as easy as it is on some ramps. However, it is a good ramp and there is ample parking very close.
The lake is big enough to have some sizable wind driven waves and can be somewhat foreboding if your aren't prepared and the wind should pick up. You will note as you head out onto the lake from Aloha that there is a breakwater akin to those you would see on a much larger body of water. It is there for a reason.
We had planned to spend the day Monday exploring the waterway and really should have waited a day or two. There was a pretty strong breeze out of the west and the waves were about 4-6' along the eastern shore. We had our 18' Four Winns Cuddy and I decided that we would at least venture out to see some of the lake. We cut straight across to the western shore through the waves and found it to be relatively calm over there. We followed the shore down to the southern end of the lake to enter the Indian River and head over to Burt Lake. We weren't able to do too much sight seeing but actually enjoyed the adventure. On the return to Aloha the waves were even a bit larger. The entrance to the channel requires a pretty sharp dog leg through a relatively narrow opening. With the following sea and the fact that the water is only about 6' at the entrance of the channel when the water is flat, I kept the boat on plane until within the safety of the breakwater and then cut the throttle. This worked ok, although, it was of questionable safety due to the very narrow channel opening I had to work through.
A couple days later we were back on the lake and found much fairer weather. We were able to explore the northern end of the lake and venture out through the Cheboygan River to Lake Huron.
